The Royal Free’s vascular surgery team is harnessing the power of cloud computing to help guide them during keyhole surgery.

The new imaging device, called Cydar, enables surgeons to have a live “sat nav” of the vessels of the patient to help guide them. The 3D imaging – accurate to better than a fifth of a millimetre - provides surgical teams with a detailed roadmap for the precision work they are undertaking. Also, because the imaging also automatically updates this means that if the patient or equipment moves the imaging also changes to reflect this.

Cydar enables operation times to be significantly reduced and other benefits include reducing costs, complexity and x-ray doses.
