This leaflet answers common questions about the clinical immunology young adult clinic. If you would like further information, or have any worries, please do not hesitate to ask your nurse or doctor.
What is the clinic immunology young adult clinic?
The clinical immunology young adult clinic is for patients aged between 16 and 25, and their families. This clinic was set up to help patients to transition between children’s services and attending an adult clinic at the Royal Free Hospital.
As you will be under the care of adult services, questions, correspondence, and information will all be directed to you, rather than your parents or carer. We are happy to discuss things with your family should you give us consent to do so.
It is important that your health and any ongoing medical issues are monitored regularly after your transition from paediatric care. We are here to support you throughout this process and ensure that your health is actively managed and monitored effectively into adulthood.
What happens at the clinic?
When you first attend the clinic, you will be seen by a healthcare assistant who will measure your height and weight. You will then meet the medical team who will review your health since your last appointment. You may also meet members of our nursing, psychology and research teams.
If you are on immunoglobulin replacement (subcutaneous or intravenous), you will have the opportunity to discuss how your infusions are going and the practicalities of having your prescription taken over by us.
It is likely you will have blood taken and occasionally other tests, such as a lung function, chest X-ray or CT scan.
The wait for your clinic appointments may be longer than you are used to, so we recommend bringing something to help you pass the time. A free Wi-Fi service is available for use during your visit. You will usually be able to bring someone with you to your appointment (some restrictions may apply).
If any issues arise before your first appointment at the Royal Free Hospital, you should contact your paediatric team as they remain responsible for your clinical needs until we formerly take over at your first visit.
When and where is the clinic?
The clinic is held on the first and third Friday of every month in clinic 7 on the first floor.
To access the clinic, enter the hospital via the main entrance on Pond Street, go past the left-hand side of the reception desk and into the hospital towards the main lifts and stairs. Once on the first floor, follow the signs to clinic 7.
