This leaflet outlines instructions for your child’s asthma and/or allergy appointment. If you would like further information, or have any worries, please do not hesitate to ask your nurse or doctor.
Key instructions for your child’s appointment
Bring all your child’s medications to your appointment, including adrenaline pens, creams, inhalers, and spacers).
Please do not give them antihistamines (e.g., piriton, cetirizine, zirtek or clarytin) for five days prior to the appointment unless you see an allergic reaction that you need to treat. This is because they can affect the results of the allergy test. Continue inhalers, nasal sprays, creams, and other oral medications (given by mouth or swallowed)
Allow up to four hours for your appointment, as you will be seeing multiple members of the allergy team. If you are concerned that your child is sensitive to a specific lentil or bean, please bring a small sample of this to the appointment as we don’t have a wide selection of these in our testing kit.
If your child has been seen by another allergy team before this appointment (NHS or private), please bring your most recent clinic letter with you as we will not have a copy of that information.
Who can attend the appointment?
Only one adult can accompany the child to their appointment.
During your child’s asthma appointment?
Your child will have their weight and height measured-please bring the red book.
You will be seen by a member of the children’s asthma or allergy team who will ask specific questions about your child’s medical history. If you have photographs of any skin rashes or allergic reactions, this can be useful for us to look at. If any testing is required, this will happen next.
This usually takes 15 minutes to develop. The team will provide education on your child’s specific medical needs during this time such as epipen training inhaler technique.
After your appointment
Sometimes your team may request that you book a blood test.
Or you may be asked to book a supervised food challenge. Contact the allergy nurses: 020 7830 2001 to book.
We will post a summary of the consultation to you and your GP. You will need to make any prescription requests to your GP, such as epipen and inhalers.
