Clinicians dedicated to providing world class care to emergency patients celebrated Acute Medicine Awareness Day (AMAD) by educating Barnet Hospital patients and visitors about the services they provide.

The Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust’s acute medicine service provides multidisciplinary assessment, stabilisation and treatment of a range of patients when they are first admitted to hospital.

The service is formed of a dedicated team of senior and junior medical staff, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and pharmacists, who provide treatment for a wide variety of conditions, including asthma, heart disease and pneumonia.

In an effort to increase awareness of the specialty, the Society of Acute Medicine launched AMAD, which this year was held on Tuesday 14 June.

On Tuesday, clinicians from the team at Barnet Hospital marked the day by manning a stall and offered information about the service to patients and visitors.

Georgia Harding, occupational therapist, said: “As a relatively new specialty, AMAD is a great platform to showcase ourselves as a specialist area which is integral to the successful treatment and discharge of patients and demonstrates great multidisciplinary working.”

Dr Ranjna Garg, acute medical consultant, said: “I love working in acute medicine because it’s exciting.  It’s challenging but also rewarding to treat very sick patients, particularly when you see how happy and thankful they are to be discharged home.

“The work of the nursing staff, paramedics, therapists and other members of the acute medicine team are essential. These are highly motivated and dedicated individuals who work hard in challenging conditions for the excellent care of patients.”
