Endocrinology is concerned with disturbances of the endocrine (hormone) glands in adults.
Our service is mainly an outpatient speciality, with clinics at Barnet Hospital, Chase Farm Hospital, the Royal Free Hospital, Edgware Community Hospital, Finchley Memorial Hospital and Potters Bar Community Hospital.
Specialist nurses, dieticians and an endocrine investigation unit support our busy clinics.
We also have an endocrine surgery unit expert in the assessment and treatment of common endocrine problems such as thyroid disease, including thyroid cancer, and parathyroid and adrenal diseases. The surgical team works closely with the physicians in the department of endocrinology.
Our services include:
- general endocrinology
- laparoscopic (keyhole) and open adrenal surgery, including for cancer
- thyroid and parathyroid assessment and surgery
- treatment for acromegaly (where the body produces too much growth hormone)
- testosterone therapy
- neuroendocrine tumours
- antenatal care
Our endocrine team pursues a very active research programme. By combining both clinical and laboratory research, we maintain a place at the forefront of advances in this specialty.

Referrals to the diabetes team can be made via a GP or hospital doctor. Patients cannot be seen without an appointment.
GP referrals should be made through the NHS e-Referral service. These will be booked into a triage appointment in the first instance.
At this stage, you should not attend the hospital or expect a call as this is for the consultant to look at your referral and decide what the next steps should be. This could be some tests, an appointment or advice for your GP.
Tertiary referrals from other hospital consultants are also available.
